2025 News update

Hello all, much progress has been made at the Mission Hall over the winter period and we can now report that the Hall has been comprehensively refurbished and now includes a kitchen and a fully accessible toilet. The interior has been re-painted and is now a beautiful welcoming space for the community and visitors alike.

We have just begun our first exhibition of the year, ‘Umbrella Legs’. Lancaster Museum has kindly lent us a selection of photographs by John Walker who lived in Sunderland Village and was a prolific photographer of Sunderland Point and the area from 1880 to 1920. You can visit our Sunderland point website to see more photos and John Walker’s life story here https://www.sunderlandpoint.net/johnwalker

You can now visit the Hall and enjoy the photographs, tides and volunteer curators permitting. We now have tea and coffee available for weary walkers as well as water for thirsty dogs (and humans!).

Latest news

Dear residents and friends of Sunderland, Overton and Middleton villages.
The Sunderland Point Mission Hall Heritage Centre, thanks to grant funding from the Lancashire Environmental Fund and other generous donations of land, money and time is about to have a toilet and kitchen facilities put in place by the end of spring.

This means the Mission Hall Heritage Centre is now entering an exciting new phase where it can be utilised in a practical and effective way for general use in education, social activities and the arts, Or potentially any other stimulating and positive way that can be beneficial for the community.

As a charity the Mission Hall Heritage Centre relies entirely on volunteers from the local community. This includes help with ongoing maintenance and repair such as:
Improving Paintwork internally and externally;
Joinery repair;
Replacement of boundary fencing;
Cutting back of overgrown boundary hedges and general management of the outside area. if you can help with any of these please let us know.

Other help required includes: cleaning, sitting and minding exhibitions and of course admin and fundraising. If possible we would like help with managing the important ‘Tramper service’ that we provide, which gives disabled people the opportunity to explore SP using an all terrain mobility scooter.

We also now need volunteers to step forward to suggest, propose or even hopefully curate an exhibition for this summer. We would like the proposals or ideas to be within the theme of local life. This could be the natural world, environmental issues or studies; artwork of the area including photography or possibly educational or historical presentations, maybe even music and drama?

If you think you could help with suggestions for the above or would like to offer your services for any other voluntary role helping with the Mission Hall please contact us here or talk to one of the trustees.

Many thanks.

Tramper Garage

Work has begun on the Tramper Garage-shed-barn-house!

Five heroic volunteers: Ted Levey, Phil Smith, Miles Sanderson, Brian Holmes and Theo Perkins braved the recent cold weather to lay the foundation for the newest new build on Sunderland Point. The work includes provision for an armoured electrical cable supply and anchorage for security purposes. The Contractors, Oakenclough Buildings will be on site in the coming days and hopefully construction will be completed before the Christmas holidays.
